My cat isn't eating: how long is too long?
Cats are experts at hiding illness, which makes a skipped meal one of the few early signals you actually get. The general rule: a healthy adult cat who misses one meal but drinks and behaves normally can be watched. A cat who eats nothing for more than about 24 hours needs a vet — even if they seem okay.
This isn't over-caution. When cats stop eating, their bodies start breaking down fat in a way their livers handle badly. That can develop into hepatic lipidosis, a serious condition of its own, and overweight cats are at higher risk, not lower.
Go to a vet now if you see
- No food at all for more than 24 hours, or a kitten refusing more than a single meal
- Not eating and not drinking
- Vomiting, laboured breathing, or hiding in unusual places on top of not eating
- Straining in the litter tray or crying — especially a male cat who can't pass urine, which is an emergency on its own
- Known or suspected access to lilies, human medication, or other toxins
Rule out the simple things first
Cats refuse food for unglamorous reasons: a new food introduced too quickly, a dirty bowl, a bowl moved next to the litter tray, another pet guarding the feeding area, or a stressful change at home — renovation noise, a new arrival, even rearranged furniture.
Try the obvious moves once: fresh food in a clean, shallow bowl, placed somewhere calm. Slightly warming wet food releases smell, and smell is most of a cat's appetite. If they tuck in, you have your answer.
What not to do
Don't wait it out with a "they'll eat when hungry" approach — that works for some dogs and fails dangerously for cats. Don't switch to milk (most cats are lactose intolerant), and don't force-feed by syringe unless your vet has shown you how.
Skip the appetite folklore too. A day of tuna is fine as a nudge; a diet of it isn't. The goal is to get them assessed, not to build a workaround.
What the vet visit looks like
Appetite loss is a symptom with many possible causes — dental pain, nausea, kidney issues, infections, stress — so expect your vet to examine and possibly suggest blood work. That's normal, not alarmist.
Bring useful details: when the last proper meal was, water intake, litter tray output, any vomiting, and anything new at home. If you track your cat's eating in an app or a notebook, this is the moment it pays off.
Is 24 hours without food really an emergency for a cat?
It's the point where you should stop watching and call a vet. It may turn out minor, but cats deteriorate quietly, and the liver complication of not eating is easier to prevent than to treat.
My cat drinks but won't eat. Does that buy more time?
Drinking is better than not drinking, but it doesn't remove the 24-hour guideline for food. A drinking-but-not-eating cat still needs a vet visit.

Singapore's heat can soften appetite slightly, but it doesn't make a cat stop eating entirely. Don't attribute a full food refusal to weather.
